This was such a FUN and wonderful book!!!
We did a ton of fun projects with it and learned a lot about
a lot of different countries and cultures.
I think we could have spent way more than 5 days on this book!!!
In this book the little girl wants to make and apple pie,
consequently the market is closed so she packs her
bags and sets out on a trip around the world to gather
her ingredients. So we learned about each place she went.
Italy=Semolina Wheat (flour)
France=French Hen (eggs)
England=Cow (milk for butter)
Jamaica=Sugar Cane (sugar)
Sri Lanka=bark of Kurundu Tree (Cinnamon)
Vermont=Apples
Here are some of the things we did....
We learned what the flag of each country looked like
and colored them and also learned what continent they were on.
One of the girl's first stops in the book was France. She went there for a French Hen because they have the most wonderful Eggs....So for this part of the story the boys were each given an egg to draw a face on and put in a ziplock. They had to take it with them anywhere they went all day long. It was their "baby" and also a lesson in responsibility. Well, it went well for the most part......until school was over and the boys sat down to watch cartoons. While watching cartoons our ferrets Bentley and Squirt came along and stole Brendan's Baby!!!! It was Hilarious!!!! It took some searching to find the "baby" but we finally did. The ferrets had hid it under the couch upstairs. Whew....
Even after all that their poor babies endured (including a trip to the mall) they remained in tact.
Not even a crack!!! "Grandma" was sooo proud!!
Up next, a trip to England for a cow.
We learned a lot about England and churned some butter.
Here we are making our own!!!
Shake, shake, shake.....shake your "butter"!!!
Then of course we tasted it!!!!! After all.....its BUTTER!!!!

Time for our own trip around the world!!!
I printed out the maps of the counties that we learned about put
them all around the house with the ingredients and sent the boys
on a scavenger hunt. After all, you can't learn all about
these things and not bake a pie at the end of the week!!!!
First stop, Italy for some Semolina Wheat that was ground into flour.
(well...we didn't grind it into flour, but in the book she did)
Thank you to whoever you are that grinds our wheat into flour!!
Onto Sri Lanka for some cinnamon.
Then to Jamaica for some sugar cane!!
Now that we have all of our ingredients......Lets bake an Apple Pie!!
