Martin Nature Center

Yesterday we took our first field trip with our new Co-Op "Ignite". It was the most beautiful Fall day!!! I mean BEAUTIFUL!!! The kids were each given a small notebook and pencil to make sketches of anything that they wanted. It was awesome!!!

Yes.... we disobeyed. But all in the name of courage and bravery!!!!
And yes.... thats Chayce 15 ft above water on a log, or what used to be a bridge.

Crossing the stream.

By the way, Chayce's flip flop fell off and when he tried to bend down and get it he lost his balance and totally fell in the water. It was hilarious!!!

State Fair Academy

We signed up to go to the State Fair Academy. It is an educational program for public school students as well as private and homeschoolers. It is FREE!! So on Monday morning, we headed out!!! Here are some of our pictures!!

They had a birthing center where there were a lot of new born farm animals.

This is a Clydesdale from the Express Ranch.

OK..... funny, very funny!!! Here we are at the "Hedrick's Petting Zoo" um...Hedrick is my maiden name!!!!! The kids thought that was funny! I told them I always knew they belonged in a zoo!!!! Hahaha

Isn't he kinda creepy?!! Maybe its just me, I think goats are scaaarrryyy!!

Poor Kangaroo!! It looks like he's either having a bad day or having a migraine...not sure which. Maybe its because he locked up with a turtle?? Weird Combo There!!

Making Wishes

This was one of the Learning Academy stops! It was "Frontier Oklahoma"
This man was running a lathe. He had some amazing bowls that he had made on his lathe.

This is a blacksmith. He was making nails.

TeePees.... kinda obvious, huh?

Then we went to see the boys Great Grandpa, or Papa as we all call him. AKA PuttPutt the clown. He is at the fair every year making baloons for kids.

Chayce always requests a sword...imagine that.
Check out all the stuff he already has, a walking stick,
a fireman hat, a stuffed animal a backpack and
now a sword....hm.... guess who ended up
loaded down with all this stuff??

Then we headed over to this Science Magic Show!!
AND Guess who got called on stage to be an assistant!!!!!
CHAYCE!!!
It was so cool, maybe because he's mine, and there were 200 other
kids in there to pick from but, IT WAS SO COOL!!!
And He did Great of Course....

He was stoked!!! This was a shot after the show was over.
Apparently this guy is on Disney and Nickelodeon??!!

We always save this part for last. "The Space Needle"

It was a beautiful day nice and cool. The kids were on their best behavior. The food was great (and greasy) as always! It truly is

Lentil

We read Lentil this past week and it was such a fun book!! We learned sooooo very much through reading this book. We learned all about the State of Ohio, and small towns, we learned about Patriotism, we learned about our tastebuds being bitter, sweet, salty, sour. We learned about becoming an expert at something. We learned about sound, reverberation and acoustics. We learned about drawing with Charcoal like the author and illustrator did in this book. Brendan especially loved this project. Here are some pictures of our week studying Lentil.

These were our pictures that we drew with charcoal pencils. We learned how to do shading and smudging.

We read a ton of books on Ohio and did some research on the internet. We were able to listen to the state song "Beautiful Ohio" and listen to the song a Cardinal sings(the Ohio state bird). We learned all about the Buckeye Tree as well.

We watched videos on flag folding and the rules for handling a flag and displaying a flag. The boys were especially touched by these videos and the care the soldiers take in folding a flag for the parents of a fallen soldier. My Grandfather, their Great Grandfather fought in WWII so when he passed away I received the folded flag. I got it out to show them as well as his Army uniform that he wore. They thought it was very awesome and it was!!

We did a fun cooking project! We ran across a recipe for Buckeye Candy in one of the books on Ohio that we checked out from the library. Here are some pictures of our "Buckeye Treats"

In the book Lentil played his harmonica in the bathtub. There the sound was improved 100%. So we gave it a try. The boys enjoyed playing on my Grandpa Hedrick's old harmonica!

In the book "Old Sneep" sucked on a lemon. So the boys each took a turn sucking on a lemon. Then we made some yummy lemonade.

It was a terrific week, tons of fun! It was really awesome that I was able to use things that had been passed down to me from my Grandparents to teach in this unit. Brendan treasures his Great Grandpa Hedrick's Harmonica and Chayce treasures his Great Grandpa Waddle's Army Hat. I am so blessed to get to hang out with my kiddos and watch them learn. Seriously....life couldn't be better!!!
