Spelling Fun!!!

I really like to find fun and effective ways to practice spelling.  I really hated the write the word ten times each approach.  So I was determined to find some fun hands on ways to practice spelling.  Here are two we did this week.  By the way, I think I screamed with excitement in the grocery store when I saw these.  I'm sure people thought I was nutty!!!!  Oh well... all in the name of fun right??!!!

Yes..... Cheez Its.....  Hey whatever works

Here is a different day and different way!!

Chayce is making chocolate pudding.

Chayce thought we needed to take a picture together.... he does that A LOT!!!

Well....you just have to do it before each new word!!!  Thats the fun of it all!!

It says "fine"  and it was!!!

hm....it occurs to me that we must like to eat while doing spelling words!!!
What a great way to learn!!!

Columbus Day

We had a lot of fun learning about Columbus.  However, I didn't realize so much controversy surrounded Columbus.  We went to the library and checked out several books and a movie on the subject, only to find out that each one contradicted each other.  It was a little exhausting trying to explain that to the kiddos, but we did our best and had fun.  I remember learning about Columbus when I was in school, but we were just taught that he thought the earth was flat and set out to prove differently.  So with that said I learned a lot myself.  Here are some of the days activities!!!

Here is our Santa Maria (made out of milk or juice cartons)

All of our research resources.

Fun little dry erase polka dots!! We use these a lot for spelling practice and vocabulary words!!

Madeline

BonJour
We just finished our five in a row on Madeline.  Honestly, I wasn't sure if the boys would like this book(you know cuz its girly) but much to my surprise they liked the book and LOVED the activities we did that went along with it!!! Ryan even got involved one night and helped me teach the kiddos! It was a really really fun book!
We listened to the book on cd.  After the book we decided to listen and sing some French songs.  As you can see Chayce wasn't fond of singing in French!!!  However, later in the day I did hear him in his room humming the tune!!!

In this book Madeline has appendicitis and has to be taken to the hospital for surgery.  So we learned all about our internal organs, muscles and bones.  This was so fun and actually took us about 2 days to finish this project.  We drew life size (or Brendan and Chayce size) bodies and then colored each internal organ and learned all about its functions, as well as muscles and bones.  Here are some pictures of this project start to finish!!

They were tracing each other to make our bodies!!

Learning about our spinal cords...yeah they are boney kids....yeah I feed them!!

They are coloring the Brain and learning that its the
Control Center of our bodies

We have pasted all our internal organs where they go!!
Now for bones and muscles and veins...

Of course Daddy had to teach about muscles!!

Painting the tissue paper that was our muscles!

Brendan's life size body!!

Chayce's life size body!!

The next day we learned all about France!!

Coloring and learning all about the Eiffel Tower.  We even went to the Official Eiffel Tower website and looked at all the pictures and took a 3D tour of it.... really cool!!

We built our own!!!

One wasn't enough...we built another one!!

The day we learned about France I felt the urge to eat French food.  So off we went on an adventure in grocery land for our ingredients.  Here are pictures of the kids making our French Cuisine... we even listened to French music while cooking and serving dinner!!  This was the best part of all and the kids have a blast cooking in the kitchen with me!!!  Oh the memories we made in there!!!!!

French Bread Pizza!!
Bon Appetit

It was a GREAT week!!!!  We learned so much!!  Body functions, internal organs, bones and muscles.  How to take care of our bodies by washing our hands and preventing the spread of germs to excercise to keep our heart healthy.  We learned about symmetry and the balance of things as well as things that are asymmetrical.  We learned about manners.  We learned about France and its continent, the capitol and some of the famous landmarks there.  We made an authentic French meal.  Its amazing the things you can learn out or one book!!  Its simply to good to be true.....oh but it is!!!!
